6. Special instructions for remote diagnosis

WARNING

If anybody is in or on the vehicle during the remote diagnosis, damage or injury may result.

  • Before carrying out a remote diagnosis, make sure that no-one is in or on the vehicle to which you are currently connecting by remote access.

7. Safety information on vehicle status information (terminal 15, network, vehicle etc.)

CAUTION

Vehicle status information – such as terminal 15, network, vehicle, the vehicle’s drive system – that is displayed in a test program may show the actual vehicle status with a delay. This means the status must be checked directly on the vehicle each time by the user before starting the work.

8. General safety regulations for working on airbag, belt tensioner and battery isolator units (pyrotechnic components)

Pyrotechnic components always contain a fuel that generates gas when it is burnt.

In some types, an additionally stored compressed gas is available for the generation of this gas.

This compressed gas is stored in a compressed gas cylinder under very high pressure.

The ignition of pyrotechnic components takes place via an electrical/mechanical igniter.

Inspection, assembly and repair work may only be carried out by trained personnel.

There are no replacement intervals for airbag units.

Never check them with an inspection lamp, voltmeter or ohmmeter.

Pyrotechnic components may only be checked while installed and using vehicle diagnostic, testing and information systems approved by the manufacturer.

Working on pyrotechnic components:

Working on the airbag control unit - J234:

The battery must be connected with the ignition SWITCHED ON.
When this is done, nobody must be inside the vehicle.
Exception: vehicles with the battery in the passenger compartment.
Stay out of the effective range of the airbags and seat belts.
Wash your hands after touching ignited pyrotechnic components of the restraint system.

Pyrotechnic components may not be opened nor repaired; always use new parts only (risk of injury).

Pyrotechnic components, which have fallen down on to a hard surface or show signs of damage, may not be installed any more.

Before handling pyrotechnic components of the restraint system, e.g. when disconnecting the electrical connector, the mechanic must perform an electrostatic discharge. This electrostatic discharge is achieved by touching earthed metal parts, e.g. by briefly touching the door lock.

The installation of pyrotechnic components must be performed directly after removing them from the transport container.

If work is interrupted, the pyrotechnic component must be placed back in the transport container.

It is not permitted to leave the pyrotechnic component on the ground without supervision.

Pyrotechnic components must not be treated with grease, cleaners or similar agents.

Pyrotechnic components must not even be temporarily exposed to temperatures exceeding 100 °C.

Please refer to the special instructions on driver and front passenger airbags in the Workshop Manual for the vehicle model.

8.1. Storage, transport and disposal of airbag, belt tensioner and battery isolator units (pyrotechnic components)

Storage according to the applicable corresponding national legislation.

Transport is subject to national and international legal requirements regarding packaging, identification, labelling and accompanying documents.

Non-ignited pyrotechnic components are to be supplied only for their intended use and in their original packaging in accordance with national legislation. If you have any questions, please contact your importer.

Only completely ignited pyrotechnic components may be disposed of along with commercial waste.

9. Notes on the start/stop system

Safety measures for vehicles with start/stop system

WARNING

Workshop employees carrying out repairs on the vehicle may be injured if the start/stop system is unexpectedly activated.

  • On vehicles with the start/stop system activated, (indicated by a message or an indicator lamp in the instrument cluster – see Owner’s Manual) the engine can start up automatically when necessary.
  • It is therefore important to ensure that the start/stop system is deactivated (switch off the ignition; if necessary, switch the ignition on again) when working on the vehicle.
  • When carrying out work in the engine compartment, the start/stop system must be deactivated.

10. General safety instructions for working on the 48 V system

WARNING

When working on the 48-volt system, faults and incorrect actions can cause hazards such as short circuits, arcing, burns and injuries due to startled reactions.

  • Inspection, assembly and repair work may only be carried out by trained personnel.
  • Before any work on the 48 V system, it must always be de-energised.
  • In the event of a fault, safety goggles and safety gloves must be worn as personal protective equipment before starting work.

11. General safety instructions for working on the high-voltage system

WARNING

Due to its voltage, the vehicle’s high-voltage system may cause hazards such as burns or lethal electric shock in the event of damage if safety instructions are not observed.

  • Label the vehicle with the warning sign for high voltage VAS 6649 and secure it against direct access by unauthorised persons.
  • In the event of a fault, observe the obligation to report accident vehicles / high-voltage components.
  • Inspection, assembly and maintenance work may only be carried out by trained personnel.
  • Before any work on the high-voltage system, it must always be de-energised.

12. Safety information for road tests

WARNING

Note that during diagnostic work and when the remote diagnosis head is connected, the functions of control units for online connections, such as the emergency call function, are restricted.

13. Vehicle with “Connect” function

WARNING

In vehicles that are equipped with Connect functions, various vehicle functions (e.g. stationary air conditioning or opening/closing the vehicle etc.) can be remotely controlled and activated by a specific group of customers. To avoid the risk of injury that can arise as a result of the Connect functions, these should be deactivated or switched off.

  • Please observe the further procedures defined in the Technical Product Information (TPI) or the Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) issued by the respective brand.

14. Security measures/unlawful use of FAZIT/GeKo

WARNING

The use of the user ID is permitted under the following conditions:

  • The use of the individual functions provided by system access is limited solely to the tasks necessary for the respective area of work and is exclusively for the employee registered in the dealership. Use for other purposes and outside the responsible importer territory of the respective country (e.g. Canada) or outside the European Union, European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland is not permitted.
  • The transfer of transferred data to third parties is expressly prohibited, unless VOLKSWAGEN AG provides prior written permission.
  • Provided data may only be stored temporarily must be destroyed/deleted or returned immediately once the task is complete, at the latest.
  • The programming of modified or manipulated and/or cloned control units is not permitted and will result in the withdrawal of the authorisation if such activities are merely announced.
  • The use of another person’s Volkswagen user ID as well as the disclosure of the password for the FAZIT/Geko system in the GRP for ODIS as well as forwarding the access data for two-factor authentication (TOTP) or forwarding the Secure ID card to third parties (third parties in this sense also include employees of the importer or VOLKSWAGEN AG) is generally not permitted.
  • If access to the FAZIT/GeKo system is no longer required, the user ID should be deregistered with the responsible administrator or the importer.
